A car veered off the A429 between Wellesbourne and Barford at around 5.45am. The vehicle came off the road and hit a bridge where it was left hanging above the water for an hour.

Emergency vehicles and paramedic crews were called to the scene and had to pull the car from the edge before they could get to the driver.

The man, believed to be in his early 20s, was cur from the car and given emergency treatment at the scene before being taken to hospital.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “Considering the position of the vehicle the driver is extremely fortunate the car did not continue over the edge into the river below.

“Crews arrived to find a car that had left the road, struck a bridge and was hanging over a drop of around 20 feet.

“Once the man’s condition was stabilised, he was transferred by land ambulance to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire for further emergency treatment.”
