Police have reminded motorists never to leave keys on view through a door or window, always to remove keys from locks and to park cars in a secure garage and install burglar alarms, security lights and satellite tracking if possible.

Crime reduction manager Det Insp Martyn Stephens stressed owners should never put themselves in danger if confronting a thief.

He added: “If someone who is determined to steal your vehicle is armed or threatens you in any way, hand over the keys. Personal safety is the most important consideration.

“Often there is more than one offender involved and you may be putting yourself at greater risk by attempting to resist a car theft.”
