Case against Warwickshire detective charged with stealing must start again

The court case against a former detective charged with stealing £113,000 from Warwickshire Police’s headquarters will have to start afresh because of an administrative error.

Paul Andrew Greaves pleaded not guilty to the charge when he appeared before magistrates in Leamington on Wednesday.

But the force today (Friday) released a statement to say that, because the earliest date of the alleged offence is June 2009, the court had been told that the old style of court proceedings had to be followed.

It has now emerged that this was incorrect and proceedings will have to start again under the new rules.

Greaves will re-attend court at the Warwickshire Justice Centre in Newbold Terrace, Leamington, on Monday June 3.

The force had initially refused to name the 54-year-old, who used to live in Harbury but now lives in Nottingham. It was only after media organisations from across the country argued the case for Greaves’ name to be released that the force overturned its original decision to hide his identity.

The theft from the Leek Wootton headquarters is alleged to have taken place between June 2009 and September 2011 - while greavs was a serving detective constable with the force.
