Chapter 1’s Leamington team are Commonwealth Games winners

During the trip, which was organised by the sports charity StreetGames, the three, aged from 18 to 20, took part in a Dragons’ Den-style presentation to pitch for £500 for their own sports project.

Out of around a dozen groups from across the country who were there on that day, the Leamington group were the winners.

Over the past few months they have been taking part in the Doorstep Sports scheme run by the housing and support charity Chapter 1.

It is a sports development programme for disadvantaged people run in partnership with StreetGames.

Farah Naz, Chapter 1’s lead for the sports initiative who led the trip to Glasgow, said: “We had no time to prepare, and we were very nervous.

“It was for all the groups on the campsite, many of whom were much larger than ours.

“We never thought we’d win, we just got up and said how we’d like the money to run a pop-up sports event in Leamington, not just for our residents, but for any young people who are interested.

“The money could help us get a nice venue and give us a chance to show how talented our residents are.

“It could break down some of the negative stereotypes about homeless young people.

“Our clients are very talented and we work with them to continue their education and find work.

“Getting involved with sports can help them learn self-discipline and overcome negative habits.’

During the trip to Glasgow the group saw the Commonwealth Rugby 7s, and had a chance to meet other young people from StreetGames programmes across the UK.

They are now planning their sports event which they hope to run in the autumn.
