Cheers! Six newcomers join Good Beer Guide

Six local pubs have achieved new entries in the latest edition of the Good Beer Guide published by the Campaign for Real Ale.

The beer lovers’ manual, launched yesterday, now lists among its favourites: the Green Man in Tachbrook Street, Leamington, the Clarendon Arms in Castle Hill, Kenilworth, the Old Fourpenny Shop in Crompton Street, Warwick, the Black Horse, Moreton Morrell, the Old Cottage Tavern, Ashorne and the Malt Shovel, Bubbenhall.

Lynn Unitt, landlady of the Green Man, says it’s the first time the pub has won a listing and was overjoyed by the news.

She said: “We’re a nice friendly pub with quiz nights, bingo, two pool teams and ladies darts, but this is recognition for the way we keep our cask ales like the Charles Wells Bombardier.

It’s the number one choice for cask ales but we also have a good choice of lagers and from October 8 to 10 we’ve got our own beer festival going on. This listing should certainly attract even more customers.”

At the Clarendon Arms in Kenilworth, the good news caught owners Charlotte McCosker, Ryan New and Sean Rouse on the hop.

The trio, who also own the next door restaurant Harringtons-on the Hill, credit their local suppliers as part of the secret of their success.

Ryan said: “Like food, real ale needs looking after - it has to have the right environment and temperature to taste good.

“We use a local of locally-sourced ale such as Purity from the Stratford area, Slaughterhouse from Warwick and Church End from Rugby.

“We’ve been really concentrating on our beer of the last six months and increased the number of pumps to four.

“We certainly sell more ale than lager.”
