Citizen of the Year: chairman Phil is a star both on and off the pitch for Wellesbourne club

Mr Rothwell is the chairman on Wellesbourne Cricket Club but also finds the time and energy to coach and play for the club.

He has been nominated for the annual award by club president Richard Hayden, who said: “ Phil is instrumental in the success the club is enjoying at the moment quite honestly he dedicates all his spare time to the club.

“In his roll as chairman he ensures the smooth running of the cricket and other activities,his roll in the coaching set up is invaluable and ensures the ongoing success we hope to achieve, at times you can see up too 50 youngsters on our coaching evenings.

“He is also responsible for the Warwickshire ladies choosing Wellesbourne as there spiritual home when not organising the general running of the on field activities he busies himself in his roll as treasurer keeping a tight reign on the finances of the club enabling us to look forward to future development and total control of our own destiny.

“He involves himself in the preparation of the wickets and the mammoth task of the ground he will lead on all the social activities at the club essential to the finances that are required to run a club like ours, not only this he can hold down a spot in the first team even though he has threatened to retire more than once.

“To say that he is Mr Wellesbourne is an understatement his dedication is legendry and although he may not thank me for this nomination there is no one more deserving.”

The campaign to find the Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of The Year is now in its third year.

The event is run and managed by The Brakes Trust in conjunction with the Leamington Courier, Warwick Courier and Kenilworth Weekly News.

The closing date for nominations has now passed and a panel of judges will now decide the winners of both the Adult and Young Citizen of the Year Categories.

Last year’s respective winners were devoted fundraisier Margaret Kite. of Kenilworth and young carer Leah Brassington, also from the town.

In 2011 Steph Devlin of the Leamington Christian Mission was recognised for her work to help homeless people in the town.

The Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance has been chosen as this year’s charity.

The awards ceremony will be held at a new venue Guy Nelson Hall, Warwick School, Warwick, on Sunday September 29.
