On Wednesday the Trust, which runs St Cross in Rugby, asked the public to consider alternatives to the emergency department due to patients experiencing unprecedented waits.

A spokesperson said: “The hard work of our doctors, nurses and other clinical staff in the hospital have ensured that a number of improvements have already been made which means for Thursday afternoon (today) it is expected that clinics will return to normal.”

Chief Executive Officer, Andy Hardy said: “I would like to thank our staff and community for working together today in what was an incredibly difficult situation.

“We are not out of this yet but are moving in the right direction. Although we are in a better position we are still experiencing exceptional pressures and would urge people to continue to consider using GPs, pharmacists, walk in centres of NHS 111before coming to ED.”

If people do need medical help fast but it’s not life threatening or they’re not sure where to go, they could consider accessing GPs, pharmacists, the Walk-in centre or calling 111.

The local 111 service will assess and direct people to the best placed service in their area.

NHS 111 is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and calls are free from landlines and mobile phones.

If patients are unsure of what services are in their local area, they can search on www.nhs.uk
