Club has been high-flying since the 30s

COVENTRY Aeroplane Club
welcomed some new high-flyers to an open weekend to mark its 80th anniversary.

The club, based at Coventry Airport, was opened in 1932.

Airport owner Sir Peter Rigby flew in by helicopter and, with the help of club chairman Rod Edwards, cut the celebratory cake.

One of the weekend’s objectives was to introduce more people to flying and give free rides to 80 people, drawn at random from the 350 visitors who arrived over the two days.

This target was easily exceeded and, by the end of the second day, 120 people were given a free flight in club members’ aircraft.

Trial lessons were also booked by 20 visitors and four signed up to learn to fly.

Demonstrations by the airport’s fire crews and a Boeing 737 flight simulator were also among the highlights of the event, which took place on Saturday and Sunday August 18 and 19.
