Club has real plans to attract new blood

Leamington Tennis Court Club (LTCC) threw open its doors last week in an initiative aimed at encouraging youngsters to take up real tennis.

Forty pupils aged between 12 and 16 from five schools - North Leamington, Myton, Southam, Trinity and Kenilworth - took to the court to learn the basics of the ancient game, which still uses older-style wooden racquets and handmade balls.

Pupils who are studying the history of sport as part of their A-levels or Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme also received a presentation on the history of real tennis.

“Our hope is that we can draw younger players into the game with a view to representing Leamington in national youth leagues against other real tennis clubs in the UK,” said Craig Swallow, head of youth development at LTCC.

“Real tennis is not only a good workout but it challenges the brain. too.

“It was great to see these local schools and their pupils grab the initiative and take up our invitation.”

Rob Morey, head of PE at North Leamington School, said the youngsters knew little about the sport before taking to the Bedford Street court.

“We are always looking to innovate and introduce pupils to minority sports so we were delighted to be involved in this open evening,” said Morey.

“It proved to be a real eye-opener and an education for all of those who attended.”

The club is hosting another open evening on Thursday and plans to run weekly youth nights in the new year.
