“Both carriageways, north and south, are currently closed while emergency services deal at the scene,” said police.

Along with police and ambulances, firefighters also raced to the scene.

Fire engines from Lutterworth and Leicester’s Western Station as well as a technical rescue unit attended the three-vehicle smash.

The van was carrying extremely flammable acetylene cylinders, making the rescue and recovery operation even trickier for the 999 services.
