Conrad’s canine is hero too as it joins charity campaign

Peg, short for Pegasus, was adopted by Pte Conrad Lewis while the Warwick paratrooper was serving in Afghanistan.

The 22-year-old was killed in action last year but one of his dearest wishes was for Peg to be taken to the UK to live with his family.

That wish was fulfilled last December and after six months in quarantine, Peg became the pet of Pte Lewis’s parents Tony and Sandi.

The family have now joined forces with Umberslade Farm Park to highlight the work of NOWZAD, a charity which made Peg’s rescue possible.

Tony is giving a series of talks at the farm during the school holidays and Peg is the star of the show.

Oliver Muntz, the owner of Umberslade, and his brother Seb were boyhood friends of Pte Lewis and the former has pledged to raise donations through the farm park’s Facebook page.

He said: “We have strong links with Conrad’s family and we are delighted to help them raise much needed funds for NOWZAD to continue its good work.

“Peg, along with many other stray dogs in Afghanistan, brought much needed comfort and companionship to Conrad and many soldiers like him.

“She is one of the lucky ones.”

The Lewis family have also launched 353, a not-for-profit grooming and gifts brand to raise funds for armed forces charities and Peg has been the inspiration behind many of its products.
