Consultation on future housebuilding in Warwick district extended

PEOPLE in Warwick district have more time to have their say about development and housebuilding in the area over the next 15 years.

Warwick District Council has extended its consultation on how development should be planned in the years until 2026 until Friday.

The survey sets out three scenarios of building 250, 500 or 800 new homes per year - effectively 3,750,

7,500 or 12,000 houses and flats over 15 years, with employment land, schools and services.

With the location of new housing to be dealt with in a future consultation, the resulting ‘local plan’ will replace the unpopular ‘regional spatial strategy’ to build up to 12,000 homes that was scrapped by the coalition Government.

The council says new growth and development could address issues such as the lack of affordable housing, areas of poverty and unemployment, and the need for more investment in transport, schools and health facilities.

It has asked the public to identify and prioritise the issues they think are the most important and consider what future level of development would best address them.

Cllr John Hammon, who is responsible for economic development, said: “The Government is giving greater control to local authorities in shaping the future development of their areas, and is urging councils to take this opportunity to engage with local communities about their aspirations for their areas.

“We want the public to tell us what the needs and aspirations are for their communities and how much new development they think we should plan to deliver for them.”

The online consultation will close on Friday at 4.45pm. Click on the link on the top right to take part.
