Consultation on library cuts

THE public has been urged to have its say on plans to close libraries and cut opening hours around Warwickshire.

Warwickshire County Council is holding a consultation on proposed £2 million cuts which include closure of Kineton library among 16 others judged “no longer sustainable”.

Opening hours at Whitnash library could be cut from 45 hours a week to 16, and from 51 hours a week to 35 at Warwick and Kenilworth libraries, with hours cut from 56 to 50 at Leamington.

A 12-week consultation will run until June 9.

Cllr Colin Hayfield, who is responsible for libraries policy, said: “We are making all the relevant information about our libraries readily available and a series of public meetings and informal drop-in sessions will take place throughout Warwickshire.

“Customers will be able to ask questions and will have the opportunity to complete a short questionnaire. “These are difficult times and tough choices have to be made.

“We want those who live, work or study in Warwickshire to be part of the decision-making process. Feedback received will be reported to cabinet in July to help councillors find the best way forward.

“Our aim is to find alternative ways to provide the library services in some of our smaller communities.”
