Cord wants you to double your donations for free to help people in Burundi

The country suffered widespread destruction because of conflict between 1993 and 2005.

Today, the country’s infrastructure is still poor and in the most remote areas only three per cent of people have access to clean drinking water.

In other areas access is still only 50 per cent.

Cord’s chief executive Brian Wakley said: “Where we work in Burundi one in four children die from diarrhoea, often caused by lack of clean water. The funding from UK Aid will literally save lives.”

The UK Aid funding will help protect 400 springs, construct six water gravity schemes and support communities and local water authorities to maintain water systems.

Six thousand latrine slabs will also be provided and community-led hygiene education will be facilitated to improve health and sanitation.

But to raise the total needed for this programme Cord have to find additional funding.

Cord’s fundraising manager Susan Barlow, said: “We often have to match funding that we receive from big donors, so we we’d like everyone to play their part by donating during the national Big Give campaign which can double donations made online for free.

“It’s a great opportunity for people to make their money go twice as far but match funding runs out fast each day so its crucial to donate online at 10am.”
