Council tax exemption for owners of ‘uninhabitable’ homes in Warwick district

Landlords of empty properties in Warwick district which are classed as ‘uninhabitable’ no longer have to pay council tax for the first year that their houses are empty.

But after 12 months, normal council tax charges would apply. Councillors on the district council’s executive committee have agreed on implementing the measure to provide an incentive for landlords to bring back propertes into use and to find tenants. Council records show that there are on average around 100 empty and uninhabitable properties in the district each year. If a property is still empty after two years, a 50 per cent discount will be applicable.

Warwickshire County Council had opposed the move.
