Items from the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum’s collection will be put on display in a major exhibition celebrating post-war British design at the Victoria and Albert Museum from the end of this month.

This iconic work was painted by the war artist on the morning after Coventry Cathedral was destroyed by bombing on the night of November 14 1940. Graham Sutherland’s first cartoon for the cathedral tapestry from 1953 and his final trial piece for the tapestry from 1958 will also be loaned to the Victoria and Albert.

Huw Jones, Keeper of Collections, said “These items are a part of Coventry’s history and they are the perfect ambassadors to show the city’s innovation and creativity.

“We’re excited to see the final exhibition and our contribution within it.”

The exhibition entitled British Design 1948-2012: Innovation in the Modern Age runs from Saturday March 31 to Sunday August 12.
