A spokesperson for Rugby Police said: "We attempted to speak to the occupants of a silver VW Golf in Ryton today.

The driver rammed our police vehicle whilst an officer was at the driver's door attempting to stop the car from driving off."

Police then pursued the car out of Ryton and onto the A423.

The driver of the Golf crashed and tried to run off - he was arrested nearby.

37-year-old Anthony Stephens of Birmingham has since been charged with dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified, possession of cocaine and driving without insurance.

He was remanded in custody and was set to appear in court today.
