Police are urging the public to be vigilant after receiving two reports of suspicious men knocking on doors in Rugby claiming to be there to take meter readings or check insulation.

A spokesperson for the force said: "The first incident happened on Friday morning when a man wearing a high vis vest and a mask knocked on a family’s door saying he was there to take their meter readings.

"The second incident happened on Monday morning when three men knocked on the door of an elderly woman claiming to be in the area checking wall cavities and insulation and needed access to the house.

"The woman refused to let the men in so they left on foot. One of the men was described as white, in his 50s with grey hair and a beard."

If someone knocks on your door unexpectedly claiming to be there to check something in your property – do not assume they are genuine and always ask for ID.

If they are genuine, they should be able to produce ID and they will not mind rearranging to come back at a later date so you are able to check their authenticity.

If someone suspicious does knock on your door, please report this to police either via the Warwickshire Police website or by calling 101.

You can also contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 0808 223 1133 who provide telephone support and advice, and will alert Warwickshire Trading Standards.

Always call 999 in an emergency.
