Warwickshire Police have played down reports that cable ties are being put on lampposts to alert thieves to houses with expensive dogs.

Many people have seen these reports on social media across the county but officers said are unaware of any such incidents.

Dog thieves have been operating in the north of the county and close to the border with Leicestershire, where MPs have called for harsher punishments for the thieves.

Reports have been made that cable ties are being put on lampposts to alert thieves to houses with expensive dogs. A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police said: “We’ve had a lot of messages recently about dog theft.

“People are concerned that cable ties on lampposts may be there for a sinister purpose to identify target houses.

“In order to stop people being concerned - please feel free to remove them from your locality when passing."
