Nurses, staff and families at The Myton Hospices were delighted to be awarded a grant of £14,500 to enable the purchase of a cuddle bed.

The donation for the specialised bed came from the Morrisons Foundation. The cuddle bed has the same footprint as a standard hospital bed, but at the touch of a button, it can widen to a double bed. This means that loved ones can get into the same bed as the patient at the hospice, and have a cuddle or offer comfort at the most tender of times.

Tracie Beechey, deputy ward manager at The Myton Hospices, said: "We would like to say a huge thank you to the Morrisons Foundation for donating £14,500 to fund a cuddle bed for our patients and their families”

“A cuddle bed can be expanded widthways so that families can knock down the physical barrier of being close to their loved one, they can lay next to each other and cuddle up without causing any discomfort. We believe the need for physical touch heightens as people grow more unwell so anything we can do to help facilitate those special moments is so important.”

“We pride ourselves on giving our patients quality time with their loved ones and providing a compassionate approach to end-of-life care - this donation really will make a big difference."

Myton provides the only in-patient hospice services across Coventry and Warwickshire, together with a range of other community based services for patients with a terminal diagnosis. All of the end of life care services are free of charge and the hospice relies on the generosity of funders to continue their vital work.

David Scott, Morrisons foundation trustee, said: “It's an honour to be able to provide this grant to offer loved ones the chance to stay with their families as they receive the expert care from the nursing staff at Myton Hospice.”

The Morrisons Foundation was set up by Morrisons supermarket in 2015 and awards grants for charity projects which help improve people’s lives. Since launching, over £37 million has been donated to hundreds of charities across England, Scotland and Wales.
