Defibrillator location map could be life saver

BUSINESSES, health centres, organisations and schools around Leamington, Warwick and Kenilworth have been quick to confirm the locations of their potentially life-saving devices for the Heart of England Defibrillator Campaign.

The automated external devices will soon be marked on an online map created by Defibfinder, the not for profit organisation which is leading the campaign.

Defibfinder’s aims are to make Leamington, Warwick, Kenilworth and surrounding villages among the safest places to live by ensuring as many people as possible have quick and easy access to a defibrillator at all times.

Adrian Lewis, who founded the organisation, said: “It’s worth remembering the words of an A & E doctor - that defibrillators are the only piece of technology that will bring a ‘dead’ person back to life.”

At a full council meeting on Wednesday, Warwick district councillors unanimously voted to support a motion by Cllr Roger Copping (Lib Dem, Leamington Manor) for the authority to provide officer support for a device to be installed in the Parade, Leamington.

The Round Table has raised the funds for the defibrillator, which will be located near Boots and Cafe Nero.

Training would be provided for free by West Midlands Ambulance Service.

Cllr Copping said he needed nine suitable trainees, who would be able to use the device,

He added: “Supporting this motion would show a commitment to health and wellbeing in the district at nominal cost as I have been donated the full funding by Leamington Round Table.

“It gives us a chance to work together for the community at a time when funding is scarce.”

Defibfinder is also supporting SADS UK’s Big Shock campaign, which is encouraging the Government to have a defibrillator installed in every school.
