DIY store could close causing 30 job losses

STAFF at the Leamington branch of an ailing nationwide DIY chain face redundancy after administrators failed to sell the business as a whole.

Administrators Ernst and Young were called in by Focus early last month and since then 55 of the company’s stores have been sold to rivals Kingfisher, B&M Discounts and Wickes.

But the Leamington Shopping Park branch, which employs about 30 people, is not on this list and is currently holding a closing down sale.

Simon Allport, joint administrator, said: “We have been working hard to sell the business as a going concern and to maximise value for creditors.

“While we have been successful in securing up to 900 jobs from the sale of 55 stores in three separate deals, finding a buyer for the whole of the business has not been possible.

“UK retailers are facing one of the most challenging retail environments in recent times and the DIY sector has become highly competitive, with only the strongest players being able to thrive and survive.”

Negotiations are continuing but the stock liquidation is likely to result in closures and job losses.
