DJ Liz helps launch new dementia café

BBC Coventry and Warwickshire journalist Liz Kershaw has opened a new Dementia Café in Southam.

The DJ, who is patron of Age UK Warwickshire, attended the launch of the café at Watton’s Lodge sheltered housing scheme last month.

The venue, close to the centre of Southam, is intended as a place where people can seek advice about dementia and memory loss, and is the result of a partnership between Orbit Heart of England, the Alzheimer’s Society and Age UK.

Housing association Orbit provided £5,000 to help launch the café. Area scheme manager Fiona McFall said many elderly residents feared dementia, adding: “The café will provide a safe, social space for people to interact with others who may at times feel alone and disempowered by the lack of accessible information on the condition.”

Gary Stanley, dementia support manager for Alzheimer’s Society added: “People enjoy visiting the cafes because it makes them feel like they are not alone.”
