Documenting Real Tennis

PHOTOGRAPHY lecturer Ray Spence used a grant from Birmingham City University to compile a “snapshot documentary” of Leamington’s Real Tennis Club - originally set up for gentlemen in 1846.

Ray’s photographs have been published in a new book, Caught In Time,

He said: “Real Tennis dates back to the days of King Henry VIII and while Leamington may not have the oldest court, tucked away in Bedford Street, it can lay claim to being the oldest club in the world where the game is still actively played.

“I wanted to capture the atmosphere and the people involved and fortunately my funding meant I had six months to really get to know this fascinating place.”

Ray’s book is aimed at a specific niche market and costs £45 but some 30 of his pictures along with 200 screen images, can be seen at Empire House, which is 1b Dormer Place.
