Elderly man was victim of scam as 36 people are targeted by fraudsters in Leamington and Warwick

A 90-year-old man was the victim of a scam as a total of 36 attempted courier frauds reported in Leamington and Warwick yesterday (Wednesday).

Offenders called victims pretending to be from the police.

They stated that the victim’s bank cards have been used fraudulently, and then ask them to contact their bank.

The fraudsters then stayed on the line in order to obtain bank details before trying to arrange for a courier to collect the bank card and use it to obtain cash.

Fortunately the majority of those targted realised this is a scam, and did not give any details.

But one man in his 90s was conned by the fraudsters and gave his bank details over the phone before handing his cards to a courier who came to his home in Leamington between 7pm and 7.30pm.

The fraudsters then withdrew money from his account.

The courier was described as a black man, in his early 20s, of slim build wearing a dark jacket with a logo.

Warwickshire Police are issuing the following advice:

*If you receive a call like this, please hang up immediately and call 101 from a different phone. If there is a crime in progress, please call 999.

*Remember the police and bank would never ask for your PIN or send a courier to collect your card.
