Bin collections in Rugby Borough remain suspended for a second day as the frozen remains of snow that hit the area on Sunday continue to cause safety concerns.

Yesterday, January 25, Rugby Borough Council said roads and pavements were too slippery for it to be safe to send waste collectors out.

And this morning the council confirmed that remained the case.

Rugby's waste collectors continued to work through the pandemic, prompting some residents to pay tribute with hand-written signs showing messages of support last year.

But for some residents, this week's decision to keep council workers safe from possible traffic collisions and injuries is a step too far.

Some decried the decision as 'health and safety gone mad' and demanded that waste collectors come out to empty their bins despite the weather.

Others pointed out the fact that many of Rugby's residential streets and pavements remain hazardous - and questioned the reasonableness of those who felt justified in asking council workers to put themselves at risk.

It is not yet clear when collections will resume, although the Met Office predicts temperatures in Rugby to stay above freezing today and through the night, offering hope the ice and snow will clear in time for services to resume tomorrow.

Residents affected are asked to leave their bins out for collection and to check www.rugby.gov.uk/serviceupdates for updates on when services will resume.
