Exhibition team want to know what makes Britain today great

WHILE the nation gears up for the Olympics, a national event hosted near Leamington, has also begun its one-year countdown.

Organisers of the Great Exhibition 2012 last year chose Stoneleigh Park as the venue for the event, which will welcome thousands of people from across the country and beyond to promote what is ‘great’ about Great Britain.

And to mark the one-year-to-go point in the calender, the four members of the Great Exhibition Team, GE2012, are embarking on a whistle-stop tour of the UK to ask people to nominate individuals, groups, places and products they think should be included in a list of 10,000 ‘greats’.

As part of their 14-day journey, Elliot, Casper, Charlie and Mike will be ready to meet and greet the people of south Warwickshire at Stoneleigh Park on Sunday August 21.

As well as collecting nominations, the team will take on daily challenges - such as meeting the mayor of the area or helping a community project - and record their favourite parts of the country to make into a series of mini documentaries.

Great Exhibition founder Julie Benson said: “I want the Great Exhibition 2012 to be truly representative of everything that is great about Britain and as with most things the best way to achieve that was to see it first-hand.

“We are asking the British public to come and meet us and put the area in which they live on the map. Their unique insights will help us create a wonderful event but also the legacy of the most comprehensive single online resource for anyone who wants to visit or holiday in the UK.”

People can also nominate their ‘greats’ online. Categories are: characteristics, commerce, entertainment, events, food and drink, hobbies, landmarks, nature, places, people, product and sports.

The exhibition itself, which will be the UK’s biggest showpiece event since the Festival of Britain in 1951, will take place during the summer months of next year.

Stoneleigh Park will be filled with interactive exhibits including ‘The High Street of the Future’ and ‘The Footprint of Britain’ – a snapshot of Britain today which will in part be drawn from the online ‘greats’ of Great Britain.

There will also be family entertainment, a vintage funfair, a food section demonstrating the best of British produce and cooking, music, comedy and other live entertainment.
