Fire at a Southam school

NEIGHBOURS were evacuated as fire gutted a temporary building at a Southam school early this morning (Friday January 6).

Firefighters from Leamington and Southam were called to St Mary’s Primary School in Daventry Road, where a temporary building was on fire.

Crews called for backup from two further crews. Firefighters had the blaze under control by 3.55am but were still working at the school at 4.40am.

Headteacher Claire Walsh, who attended the scene, said the school will still be open today (Friday) as the main building had not been affected.

The hut houses St Mary’s children’s club, but its chairman Kim Bendzak said the club would continue to run from the school’s main hall building.

She praised fire crews who protected equipment in other parts of the school and thanked Mrs Walsh for finding the club alternative accomodation.

The club enables parents to drop children aged between three and 11 off early to school and collect them later, and also runs during school holidays.

Mrs Bendzak said: “We will still be offering exactly the same service for parents and we will not be affected in any way.”

Residents in a neighbouring house were evacuated

Nobody is believed to have been hurt in the blaze.
