Fire in Leamington town centre: firefighters continue to tackle blaze

FIREFIGHTERS are continuing their efforts to put out a fire at an art gallery in Leamington town centre this afternoon.

They were called to the incident at Warwick Studios, next door to Aubrey Allen the butchers, in Warwick Street at about 1.30pm.

Seven fire engines, including a ‘Simon Snorkel’ platform engine are at the scene and firefighters have climbed onto the roof on Barney’s Toy Store in Park Street in order to tackle the fire from that position.

Smoke, which has been billowing from the building, has now mostly cleared in the road but is now coming from the roof of the building.

Nobody has been hurt in the fire, which is believed to have started on the ground floor of the property.

Police have closed a section of Warwick Street and shops and businesses nearby were evacuated as smoke came into them.

Jonathon Broom, the owner of Barney’s Toy Store, said he first became aware of the fire when thick smoke was sucked into his shop through the extractor fans at the back.

Mr Broom added: “Thick, mustard-coloured smoke came in and immediately sunk to the ground.

“When we went upstairs and looked out of the stockroom window it appeared to be coming from the end of the building where Wall’s is.”

More reports to follow.
