Chairman Danaë Sheridan, who announced the appointment at the charity’s annual meeting last week, said: “We are very fortunate to have James as our patron. He has always been a staunch supporter and advocate on behalf of older people.”

Mervyn Eastment, co-director of national co-operative Change AGEnts, spoke at the meeting, urging senior citizens to “take control and change the narrative that older people are a burden on society”.
