Despite major work starting all over again in High Street and Jury Street, the town of Warwick is definitely open
for business.

That’s the word from traders, office workers and residents in the Warwick Rocks consortium of town champions who have already negotiated free parking tomorrow (Jan 11) and next Saturday to encourage shoppers to persevere despite the road closures.

Visitors can leave their cars in the Linen Street multi-storey, in Westgate, West Rock, The Butts, New Street, Priory Road and Castle Lane.

Earlier this week it was also decided that the car park in St Nicholas Park will also be free.

It’s the fourth time in 18 months that Jury Street and adjoining High Street have been dug up.

A new “puffin” traffic light controlled pedestrian crossing is being installed at the High Street end, close to the junction with Swan Street.

At the same time county contractors are taking the opportunity to carry out remedial works to the poor resurfacing done previously. Work might take all month.

Traders lost the fight to have the original zebra crossing returned to a spot near Church Street.

But after three big and several smaller disruptions to the through road, all they want now is for this to be the last closure for the forseeable future.

Warwick Rocks spokesman Jack Linstead said: “Clearly our town’s businesses are concerned about the potential for up to a month of road closures.

“But let’s also make sure we shout about the positives of Warwick and get people into town supporting our traders.”

Chris White MP has already written to Peter Butlin, the county council’s portfolio holder for transport to request updates on the work by the end of each week.

With good weather the work could finish ahead of schedule.

Mr White said: “We want to make sure people are not put off from coming to Warwick which is very much open for business.”

Until the job is completed, Swan Street will become a two-way street with access from Market Place, while The Butts will be temporarily one-way, from Castle Hill towards Northgate.

People who actually live on the street and who currently park in the W2 zone will be allowed to move their cars to the W1 area.
