April 15, 1916

Claiming that dentistry was of national importance to the good of the community and pleading that he had appointments on his books for months to come and patients waiting for their teeth, John Cunningham Ward of 19 Market Place, Rugby asked the Local Tribunal to consider two months’ exemption. If he was called up sooner, he said, it would not only be unfair to him but to his patients who had paid deposits. The appeal was dismissed.

April 15, 1966

On Monday one of the most important industrial re-developments in this country, the railway electrification of the London-Manchester-Liverpool line, bears fruit. The new electric services then come into operation and means that Rugby will get 32 London-bound trains a day. There will be 25 return trains. Two services each day will complete the journey from Euston to Rugby in 66 minutes. Steam engines will completely die away from the Rugby scene and diesels, replaced by electric engines, will be transferred to regions to replace other steam engines.

Companions who shared memories of joy and pain while held captive together in a prisoner of war camp have been reunited nearly 50 years on. Rugby’s Bill Simpson and lifelong friend Dennis Perry have spent the past few weeks reminiscing about the three years they spent together in a German POW camp during the second world war. The two have been writing to one another for several years, but have only just met - and instantly recognised each other from their days of imprisonment in Austria.
