Fundraisers dive in to help soldiers and their families

FUNDRAISERS have dived in at the deep end to raise money for a good cause which will help the families of wounded servicemen.

Scuba diving instructor Ray Kirton organised a sponsored swim and snorkel at Southam Leisure Centre recently.

The funds raised, which amounted to more than £600, will go towards plans to build a new family visiting accommodation block at the Royal Centre For Defence Medicine in Birmingham.

Mr Kirton said: “The motivation came from watching the documentary about Prince Harry’s Arctic walk which was being completed by the brave disabled armed services personnel.

“Their motivation and spirit not to give up is a great inspiration for everyone.”

Mr Kirton has thanked his family and friends who made the event a success including teacher Mike Swan and a group of year 7 pupils from North Leamington School who raised £300.

He has also thanked staff at the leisure centre including manager Martin Walters, who allowed the pool to be used for free.

Mr Kirton said: “A diverse group of local people all got together to support this worthy cause.

“It was a wonderful experience of people working together positively and we all had lots of fun.”

The Royal Centre for Defence Medicine, based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, provides medical support to military operational deployments.

It also provides secondary and specialist care for members of the armed forces and training for defence personnel.
