Fundraisers get to join the millionaires club

MORE than £1 million has been raised by members of the Leamington and Warwick branch of Cancer Research UK over the last 60 years.

And at a recent lunch to celebrate the branch’s diamond jubilee, 200 guests helped raise another £4,000 at the event held at Warwick School.

The money raised was a record for the branch’s annual lunch.

Also at the event was flautist and fundraiser Katherine Brookes, who was presented with A Guinness Book of Records certificate of achievement.

Katherine, who worked part-time for the Warwickshire County Music Service, broke the world record for a continuous flute recital.

It was staged in aid of Cancer Research and raised more than £1,000 in sponsorship during the two-day event at the Civic Hall in Bedworth.

Frances Milner, Cancer UK’s fundraising director, presented the committee with a certificate to mark the committee raising more than £1 million.

He said: “We are so proud of the Leamington and Warwick committee members.

“They are such a strong fundraising team.”

Branch committee president James Plaskitt, former Warwick and Leamington Labour MP, said: “We are a small committee but we hope our efforts have big consequences.

“Every ten volunteers within Cancer Research UK support one researcher. So, we will always welcome more volunteers.”

Committee chairman Pat Gagg said: “The committee would like to take this opportunity of thanking the people who have supported all our fundraising events over the years.

“Without their support we could not raise the sums of money we do for vital research.”
