Funds needed to repair delapidated churchyard gates in Southam

The first hurdles in a community project to repair the delapidated gates at Southam Church have been cleared.

The volunteers who make up Southam Civic Ideas Forum (SCIF) have been battling for four years to obtain the necessary quotes, consents and approvals to have the churchyard entrance gateway repaired and reinstated.

The group has now secured listed building consent and approval from the Coventry Diocese, as well as planning permission for the work.

But as the project, which has the support of the town council and the church, will cost between £35,000 and £40,000, the group now urgently needs to raise the money needed.

SCIF chairman Len Gale said: “Substantial sponsors will be given the opportunity to have their names engraved on a plaque beside the restored gateway. Everyone who makes a donation, no matter how small, will be registered on a scroll held in perpetuity inside the church itself.”
