‘Green’ officer role to be created for Warwick district

DRIVING forward a new green agenda for Warwick, Leamington, Kenilworth and surrounding areas will be the role of a new official at the district council.

The council will be recruiting for a temporary one-year post for an officer to put a plan into place that will help the council make a significant reduction in its carbon emissions and improve
energy efficiency within the district.

The Government’s CO2 reduction
targets require the council to reduce its emissions by 34 per cent by 2020 – but officials have calculated that, if the
council carries on without taking further action, this target will not be achieved.

To make changes that will count, a dedicated member of staff will
investigate how the council can respond to the various targets and challenges within Government policies.

Speaking at a meeting of the council’s executive committee, Cllr Jane Knight, representing the council’s finance and audit scrutiny committee, said: “We need to try to get this person recruited as soon as possible.

“Don’t leave it until April because there is so much work to be done.”

Cllr Moira-Ann Grainger added: “I do hope we are going to be a bit more
effective in our sustainability demands.

“It’s possible now to build energy-
efficient properties that are quite
reasonably priced.”
