Guild launches its new group for the younger generation

A NATIONAL women’s group has selected Leamington to launch its revamped group for the younger generation.

The Townswomen’s Guilds (TG) has 30,000 members across the UK, and the new group is specifically aimed at a younger generation of women who are interested in making new friends, learning new skills and campaigning on a host of relevant issues.

Although members of the TG already range in age from 18 to 100, the launch of Leamington’s very own ‘next generation’ guild is the first time the organisation has created a ‘modern group’.

Collectively the new members will be able to handpick their own events and activities, which could include guest speakers, wine tasting sessions, make-do-and-mend classes, Zumba demonstrations or even burlesque dancing. Even the official name of the group is still to be decided so it can reflect everyone’s interests, passion and even humour.

Everyone is welcome to attend the launch event, which will take place on Tuesday at 7pm. The theme of the event is a fashion swap-shop, where attendees can bring up to five items of clothing, accessories or shoes and swap them one-for-one with other people. The event will also provide a brief overview of the TG, including its high profile campaigns, which have recently hit the headlines and grabbed the attention of Westminster.

Speaking about the launch and discussing the new modern face of the TG, national chairman Pauline Myers said: “The TG has a long and proud heritage stretching back to 1929.

“However, we’re an organisation that moves with the times which is why we are now looking to welcome a new surge of young and dynamic women.

“We want to challenge any preconceptions that people may have and create a new group that, by catering for the needs of young women, will lead us forward into the next generation of our history. And where better to launch our new initiative than the vibrant town of Leamington Spa.”

Attendance at the launch event - held at The Glasshouse - is free and without
obligation to join.

Pauline added: “In these austerity times a fashion ‘swap-shop’ is a great way to save money, wardrobe space and the environment – all whilst having a cup of tea or indeed a glass of wine or two.

“Not only will attendees make new friends, they’ll also be able to walk away with a new outfit. It certainly sounds like a perfect evening to me!”
