Halt to bulk meter work gives respite to residents

RESIDENTS of a sheltered accommodation block in Leamington have been given a reprieve in their fight for fair water bills.

The Courier reported last week that the elderly people who live at Culworth House in Culworth Close were angered by Severn Trent’s plans to install a bulk water meter, which would mean them having to pay for water usage in the communal areas of the building and an equal amount for each flat.

But the residents have received a letter from their landlord Midland Heart which says the work will be halted while a “high level” meeting takes place between the housing organisation and Severn Trent to “sort out the metering problem at Culworth House”.

Bob Bentley, 71, who has lived at Culworth House for nine-and-a-half years has raised concerns about the meter and the large bills he and residents have been receiving.

Mr Bentley said: “We might have won this battle but the war is far from over.

“Sometimes in life you’ve just got to stand your ground.”
