Head wants North Leamington to be a joy for its pupils

NORTH Leamington School has marked the start of a new school year by welcoming new headteacher Joy Mitchell.

A teacher for more than 27 years in a range of schools across Warwickshire, Mrs Mitchell began her career teaching PE and has gained experience in a variety of leadership roles including curriculum development, professional development of staff, coaching of individuals and teams and providing intervention and support for both staff and students.

Over the past year she was seconded by Warwickshire County Council to support a school in its last term before closure to ensure standards were maintained.

She said: “I want North Leamington School to be a happy school with high standards and expectations, a place to be proud of and where every individual is valued for their unique contribution to the school.

“I want success to be recognised at every opportunity and for everyone to thrive.

“We are about to start the next stage of our very exciting journey from good to outstanding.”

Mrs Mitchell has praised the school’s “state-of-the-art” facilities and promised staff will provide outstanding teaching to allow students to develop an ability to be resilient, resourceful and reflective individuals who can work with others to reach their full potential.

She said the school cares for all of its students and will support and challenge them.

She added: “As the new headteacher of this wonderful school I will invest in the capability of every member of our community and help them achieve their potential.”

The school’s former year 11 pupils again excelled in the GCSE examinations over the summer.

For the fourth year running the pupils improved the school’s previous overall results to reach higher levels of success in all areas.

Of the pupils who sat the exams, 87 per cent gained five or more grades between A* and C while 61 per cent of students gained five or more A* to C grades in subjects including English and maths.

Of almost 2,000 individual exam entries 26 per cent achieved A* or A grades.

Mrs Mitchell said: “I’m genuinely delighted with this year’s GCSE results because, combined with excellent A-level results, they show that the new school has sustained its upwards trend in results for four consecutive years and has now reached a much higher level of general performance.

“Following our excellent Ofsted inspection in March, these results demonstrate the school is set fair for the future.”
