Help us find your Citizen of the Year

More than 100 pupils in every 1,000 in local schools are full-time carers. And these youngsters often only come to the notice of authorities because they fall asleep in lessons, exhausted by the caring role which is on-going. There is no respite, no holidays and no fun.

So this year, The Brakes Trust wants to bring their plight to the notice of everyone in the community by introducing Young Citizen of the Year, as part of its search for Citizen of the Year 2012.

Following on from the success of the event in 2011, all those associated with the Citizen of the Year awards voted to make it an annual event. It will be on Friday, March 30 at a new venue, the Town Hall, Leamington.

Today sees the start of the campaign to find the individuals most deserving of the awards. Readers are asked to nominate volunteers, unsung and unrecognised, who give their time unselfishly to make life more comfortable and more enjoyable for others.

Nominations of no more than 150 words listing the outstanding qualities of the individual must be marked “Coty” including the name, address, and phone number of the sponsor and sent to [email protected] or hand delivered to the Courier offices at 32, Hamilton Terrace, Leamington Spa CV 32 4LY no later than Monday, March 5. You can also find out more and enter by visiting www.citizenoftheyear.org.uk

Any young citizen must be no older than 16 on the closing date.

There were 19 nominations for Citizen of the Year 2011. The quality of the nominations was so high that the judges’ panel encourages readers to nominate the same individuals again.

“Several would have been worthy winners of the title,” says Peter Davis, chairman of The Brakes Trust.

Courier/Weekly News editor Chris Lillington said: “We are very pleased to support once again The Brakes Trust’s Citizen of the Year campaign.

“Last year’s event revealed there is an amazing number of people out there who do wonderful deeds on a daily basis.

“I’m sure there are even more unsung heroes out there so if you know someone suitable I would urge you to nominate them for an award and help get them the recognition they deserve.”

The Brakes Trust, which manages the search, has chosen two local charities: the Warwickshire Young Carers Project and The Northampton and Warwickshire Air Ambulance, to be the beneficiaries of funds raised through the awards evening.

Joint sponsors of the campaign are Mask-arade, manufactures and supplies personal face masks to party goers and celebrities, and EOS Energy, suppliers of solar panels; two companies that are part of the Alumet Group at Southam.

The Trust members and the majority of those associated with Citizen of the Year give their time and services free of charge, which is reflected in the price of the tickets.

Tickets for the Awards Presentation, priced £12 to include entertainment and a finger buffet, can be obtained from the Courier offices or through www.citizenoftheyear.org.uk

Please book early as the awards evening was sold out last year.
