Holleran: promotion push needs supporting

Leamington boss Paul Holleran says it is not too late to get on board his side’s promotion bandwagon and is urging the town’s floating fans to get themselves down to the New Windmill tomorrow.

Brakes entertain Barwell in their first home league game since January 12 with the cushion of an eight-point lead over second-placed Hemel Hempstead, having played two games less.

But despite their rise to the top of the table, Brakes’ average attendance of 513 is some way below the 661 they achieved when they won the Southern League Midland Division.

A gate of 643 for the New Year’s Day fixture at home to Bedworth hinted at an upturn in interest and on the back of four straight away wins, Holleran is anticipating a similar turnout for the visit of the Kirkby Roaders.

And, with nine home fixtures still to play he said a surge in support would have a twofold effect on his side’s title challenge.

“The team is playing with confidence, performing well and scoring goals,” said Holleran.

“Everybody is enjoying being down there and when Leamington are doing well the supporters are our 12th man.

“I’ve been to see three games in the last few days and the atmosphere was nothing compared to what we can expect on a Saturday.

“The New Windmill is a nice compact ground with a great atmosphere.

“And to those people who are wavering, I’d say come down and support your local club.

“By doing so you’re generating extra money for the club which, if we do need to bring anyone in, will certainly help me.”

Holleran was full of praise for the club’s travelling support, which again turned out in numbers to see Brakes battle to a 3-1 win at Kettering on Sunday.

And he said the run of away games had tested both the fans and players.

“We have great away support wherever we go and we’re really fortunate to have such numbers, especially in difficult times and with all the costs involved,” he said.

“The travelling and heavy pitches takes its toll on the players, too.

“Most work 40 to 45 hours a week and when the players walked off the pitch at Arlesey, Barwell and Kettering they were physically drained.

“So it’s nice to get a few games under our belts at home.”

Joe Magunda is still not fit enough to start tomorrow for Brakes, who return to the New Windmill on Tuesday night for the visit of Bedford.
