This amazing picture of the terrifying smash showing the destroyed van on Friday morning (October 2) has been posted by Leicestershire Police Specials.

They said: “The driver of the van in the middle (yes that’s a van) was told to get a lottery ticket.

“Very happy to report only slight injuries.”

The accident happened just after 10am on Friday on the busy motorway’s northbound carriageway between junction 20 and junction 21.

The two truck drivers escaped unhurt as thousands of drivers were forced to back up with both carriageways closed as the accident was dealt with.

Along with police and ambulances, firefighters also raced to the scene.

Fire engines from Lutterworth and Leicester’s Western Station as well as a technical rescue unit attended the smash.

The van was carrying extremely flammable acetylene cylinders, making the rescue and recovery operation even trickier for the 999 services.
