‘Inspirational’ stroke survivor from Leamington helps others

A LILLINGTON woman whose experience of living through a stroke and heart attack inspired her to volunteer to help others has been nationally recognised.

Jane Malone, of Gresham Avenue, was presented a Life After stroke certificate from Bob Warman, of Central Tonight on ITV, in recognition of her voluntary work with the Stroke Association.

Speaking at the ceremony, Bob said: “The courage of all the nominees is inspiring. A stroke can have a devastating impact on people’s lives, but Jane has truly shown that there is life after stroke. She has taken her experience and used it to help other stroke survivors in her community.”

Jane, who had a stroke and heart attack six years ago, was nominated for her voluntary work as the group organiser for Warwick and Leamington Spa stroke support group and with the Stroke Association.

She said: “It is very humbling to be nominated for an award. I receive a lot of support from my friends in the group and will do everything I can to keep the group running and grow.”

The charity, which is marking its 20th anniversary this year, runs the awards to recognise and celebrate the courage and determination shown by people who have had strokes and their carers to overcome the effects that come with the experience.

The awards also recognise the compassion and commitment of people and organisations to rebuild lives that have been affected by stroke.

Hugh Tibbits, regional head of operations from the Stroke Association in the West Midlands, said: “Today has been inspirational, it is very humbling to see how people have rebuilt their lives after stroke.

“If you know a stroke survivor, carer, volunteer or professional, let them know how remarkable they are by nominating them for a Life After Stroke Award.”

There are nine awards for which people can be nominated. The nomination period runs until March 1 next year. To put someone forward, call 0207 566 1540, email [email protected] to be sent a form by post, or do it online.
