And they are inviting people to go along and join them in viewing the church, unusually built by a woman, Miss Louisa Ann Ryland, and designed by the eminent Victorian architect Sir George Gilbert Scott.

Among its treasures are beautiful marble columns, carved capitals, a tabletomb designed by Pugin and a memorial to one of the ‘Dambusters’ killed in action in 1943. The open weekend begins on September 26 with a concert by The Rococo Quartet. Celebrations will end on the Sunday when the Bishop of Coventry, the Rt Rev Christopher Cocksworth, will lead the service, accompanied by music from St Mary’s Scholars Choir. Church treasurer Gail Frost said: “This is no ordinary church building – its marble and carved wood throughout.

“It looks like a small cathedral and many visitors say it is a hidden jewel in the countryside.”
