Warwick is already known for its nationally-acclaimed folk festival every July. Now the Warwick Rocks group has plans for a midsummer music festival in June, a food and film festival in August plus Christmas films and markets.

Group spokesman Jack Linstead said: “Warwick can only rock if local people get behind these events and offer some financial support.

“We want to attract pledges of anything from £5 to £250 plus from residents and companies with a stake in keeping our town vibrant.”

Even pledges of £5 on the group’s website will attract an honourable mention. While retailers or companies who might manage £250 or more will have their names displayed on the big screen and feature in a Warwick Rocks video to be shown at all the events.

Last August’s food and film festival had to be cancelled at the last minute largely due to legal problems over the certification of films which could be shown in a public space.

Since then the group, backed by a host of volunteers, has held talks with Warwick District Council.

As a result they have been advised they can screen any films with a parental guidance (PG) certificate in the open air in Market Place, Although none with a certificate 12 or a higher rating.

Mr Linstead said: “We have set up a website for donations and the rewards of backing us. For administrative reasons we have also set a deadline on April 20 for pledges of cash.

“If we get nearly that amount we may consider extending the deadline slightly. Alternatively, we will have to cancel one of the events. Hoefully not”
