Kenilworth pub closes a year after winning award

The pub, which is owned by the large pub company Punch Taverns, had a notice of closure placed on its door on Monday September 28.

A spokesperson for Coventry and District CAMRA said: “We are shocked and appalled to hear of the sudden closure of the Royal Oak.

“This is yet another loss of a much valued and decorated community pub, revered by its customers.”

Simon Moore, who had bought the lease on the pub, described the pub’s fate as “the end of an era” in a post on the pub’s Facebook page.

It had won the CAMRA award for Coventry and District’s best pub for two years running, having first won the award in 2013.

The award is only given to pubs with excellent atmospheres, drinks, and staff.

In a statement, Punch Taverns said it wishes to re-open the pub as quickly as possible with temporary management, and anyone interested should visit punchtaverns.com.
