King’s High School pupil could win Amnesty Youth Award

Daniella Cugini, 16, will head to Amnesty International’s central London headquarters for the prestigious awards ceremony tomorrow (Wednesday) where the winner will be announced.

The King’s High pupil impressed the panel of judges with her article entitled ‘Kate exists to nobody but herself’.

Daniella, a strong and vocal supporter of lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender, transexual and intersexed rights, was thrilled when she was told that she’d made the finals.

She said: “I really care about this issue, so it’s fantastic to think that my work has made the shortlist.

“It’s a real boost of confidence for a writer to have something like this happen.”

This year, over 7,000 young people from all over the UK took part in Amnesty’s Youth Awards.

Pete Henshaw, editor at SecEd magazine, was one of the judges for the reporter category.

He said: “Danielle’s article is well written with a climax to the piece.

“The article has a really strong ending with no wasted words and a good level of research behind it.”

As part of the ceremony Daniella will be given the opportunity to see how a national newspaper operates when she attends a workshop hosted by The Guardian newspaper.
