Leamington Hub replaces day centres for those with learning disabilities

ADULTS with learning disabilities can now drop in to a new service in Leamington town centre for support, to socialise and find out about courses they can follow.

Following the closure of day centres for people with learning disabilities around Warwickshire, the county council - which had been funding the centres - began working with Bromford Housing Association to set up the Hub, which opened at Leamington town hall on Monday.

Similar ventures managed by the council and Bromford are being set up at other spots around the county, including at Studley, Stratford and Atherstone.

As well as face-to-face support, advisors at the drop-in point can provide people with information on training and courses to help them find jobs, improve skills, take up new hobbies and learn how to support themselves.

Other agencies and public services, such as the neighbourhood police team, are also using the Hub as a focal point so that people can contact them if they need to.

Hen Reynolds, Hub manager for Bromford Support, said: “Leamington’s town centre is already thriving with so much for the community - and now the Hub will add to that buzz of activity by providing a supportive resource for local individuals who are often overlooked.

“The Hub is a very innovative project, a new direction for adult support which puts increased emphasis on giving people the opportunity to live independently.”

She added, “The open day will be a fantastic way to mark the beginning of the journey - and hopefully a long working relationship - with Warwickshire County Council.”

Warwickshire County councillor Izzi Seccombe, responsible for policy on adult social care, said: “We want people to be able to develop and achieve in all areas of their lives. The hubs are an important part of providing a wider range of opportunities and ensuring that whatever the range of abilities the customer has, their needs will be catered for.”

The Hub at Leamington town hall is open from Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 4.30pm. For details on courses available and on how to set up running sessions there, call Hub advisor Donna Davies on 07436 800954 or go online.
