Leamington Rotary’s Trees of Light will help Myton patients

Doctors, Heather and David Dukes had dedicated their lives to caring for others.

From helping Malaria sufferers while working in Africa to fighting for free healthcare for homeless people in Coventry, they always ensured their patients received the best care possible.

When Heather was admitted to Myton Hospice in August 2014, the Myton team worked hard to ensure she received the same high standard of care as well as offering support to her family.

Heather, who worked as a GP in Coventry for many years, was diagnosed with angiosarcoma, a rare form of cancer, in July 2014 and was referred to Myton after a stay in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

David said: “The thing that really struck us was the cheerfulness of the place.

“We were met with smiles from everybody and found it to be a place of great comfort and love.

“One thing that we really appreciated was the spiritual care.

“We are Christians and we enjoyed being able to take communion around the bed which brought us great comfort”

The couple married in September 1964 and had originally planned to celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary with a big party.

After hearing of their plans for a smaller gathering , the Myton team offered the family use of the Warwick day hospice to hold a party for family and friends.

The party was a double celebration as it took place on the day before Heather’s 72nd birthday.
