Leamington school turns black and white as final whistle sounds for headteacher

A FITTING football-themed farewell was bid to a long-standing Leamington headteacher who has had his final day at school.

Pete Farrell led St Paul’s Primary School since 1999 and has been a teacher there for 16 years – but he closed the school gates behind him for the last time before Christmas to start a well-earned retirement.

And pupils gave him a memorable day by throwing a surprise send-off – and turning up to school dressed in black and white, the colours of Grimbsy Town, the football club that he passionately follows. The
children also created a special wall display and picture board to present to their headteacher.

Class teacher Louise Nealon, who worked with Mr Farrell for many years, said: “Pete knows every child and every family due to the fact that he stands outside the school gates at the beginning and end of every day.

“His supportive attitude has guided us well through all the education changes and he is always ready to listen to everybody and give sound advice. He brought a real community feel to St Paul’s.”

Ms Nealon said Mr Farrell always emphasised the importance of good manners and politeness, demonstrating this “by example”.

She said: “He has always shown great energy and enthusiasm in thinking up and putting into place new initiatives which the children always appreciate.

“He is a great quizzer who has a huge range of knowledge and facts. He encourages the children to learn and helps to create a positive and happy school.”

Mr Farrell, who has a wife and three sons, is reportedly “obsessed” with times tables, but he is also very fond of football.

Ms Nealon added: “He will be hugely missed by everybody at St Paul’s, but through his great leadership we know that we will be able to look forward to a successful future.”

Matt Bown will take over as headteacher at St Paul’s in the new year.
